3 Truths About Motivation

As a coach, I often hear people say things like, “I struggle with will-power and motivation.” They seek help with accountability and a task manager. While I’m happy to help, just focusing on your will-power is not enough!

Motivation is an area I love to focus on with clients because once you learn the power you have inside you, you can change your life’s circumstances pretty quickly. In this article, I’ll share with you 3 things about motivation you might not know in order to help you grow.

3 Truths About Motivation

  • It begins in you! Do you wake up every day ready to face your day or do you have to drag yourself out of bed? I used to have to drag myself out of bed every day. Until I found my passion for helping myself and others grow and learn to serve others. Once I found what I was really good at and had a simple plan in place, every day I wake up ready to go- most days before my alarm goes off! If you’re not feeling motivated, chances are you aren’t doing the thing you're really passionate about. Start here first!
  • Motivation Creates Momentum. When you’re motivated, you have more momentum in life. Things seem to come easier and quicker and with less work. It’s easier to make decisions and get work done, and definitely easier to inspire others to work, too. Increase what motivates you (tasks, jobs, relationships, etc.) and watch your momentum increase. Also, decrease what de-motivates you, and your momentum will increase. For example, I recently let some clients go because they took up so much of my time and energy and really drained me. While the money was good, my time and energy are more important to me than money. When I have high energy and time, I have momentum and other parts of my business can grow.
  • Celebrating wins creates momentum. Don’t wait for something ‘big’ to celebrate- celebrate the small stuff, too! I give myself a mental gold star when I have a conversation and don’t say the negative thing out loud that just popped into my head! This works for your people, too. If you lead a group of people, celebrate their wins. Praise their effort, even if it didn’t get the result you all wanted or intended. Reward their accomplishments. It all adds to your group momentum, which will increase team morale (i.e. motivation)

I highly suggest you conduct a motivation reflection and see what motivates you and what de-motivates you. Then, do it with your team. Make adjustments as needed, and watch your results come to you, almost without any work at all!
