Go With The Flow

Some people seem to have more momentum in life than others, don’t they? Their business is growing, their children are angels, and they seem to have amazing relationships. Especially if you watch social media posts! Do they have some sort of secret that the rest of the world doesn’t know about?

Well, one thing I’ve noticed is that the people who understand certain principles of life tend to be more successful. And, one of those principles is the law of rhythm. The law of rhythm in its simplest form says that there are natural highs and natural lows and you are either going into a high or a low at any one time.

We see this in nature. The 4 seasons. The farming cycle. Day and night.

We can also apply this principle to our thought life. And this is what really successful people do. They know that there will be natural ups and downs and what to do when you experience those. For example, if you are feeling ill or injured- you might be in a low. When in a low, it’s time to rest and recover and care for yourself, not fight the low and extend it over time. When you’re in a high- everything seems to be going well, you have lots of momentum moving forward in your life- that’s when you make decisions and get the work done.

When you honor this natural cycle you invite more success into your life!

So, how can you increase momentum in your life? Here are a few tips:

  • PASSION- what gives you passion, specifically for work? What really gives you energy, the things you LOVE to do? Maybe the things you consider play that add value to others? Do more of that! When you are filled with passion, you will experience higher highs and even higher lows!
  • REMOVE DEMOTIVATORS- understand what steals your passion and joy in the workplace. For me, it’s the simple tasks that need to be done every single day that annoy me! I like project work or anything that moves me or another person or group forward. Cyclical jobs like laundry and dishes demotivate me, so I delegate those. A good reason to have teenagers, right?!? 😉
  • ATTITUDE CHECK- one way to really understand if a task is motivating or not is to do an attitude check. Rate yourself 1-10 (1 being low) on how much energy you have when you’re DONE with that task. For example, there are certain clients or speaking engagements that I leave feeling more energized than when I arrived and others that just drain me. I want to always take advantage of the highs and momentum, so I might decrease the energy sucks and increase the other clients.

One thing is for sure, when you are able to use the law of rhythm to your advantage, you will start to feel better and see more positive results. I know for me, this has been the case. When I experience a low now, I might cancel my appearances for a day and care for myself and come out of it quicker, versus ignoring myself for weeks on end and pushing through resulting in a sickness that might last a few days.

This is a LAW and works for you or against you. It cares not whether you are ignorant of it and is no respecter of persons- it has no favorites. Use it well!
