See Their Value

In order to really add value to other people, though, you need to do three things.

  • Value Yourself: know, like, and trust yourself first; whenever there’s an issue examine yourself first before you try to ‘fix’ another person
  • Value People: to you value people in general? What’s the evidence that you do?
  • Value ‘Them’: do things that serve the people in your immediate spheres- home, work, clubs, community, etc.

First-time leaders are generally all about getting results. I was no different! And many times I did things at the expense of my people. I didn’t value them as much as I could have. If I had it to do all over again, I would definitely do things differently!

  • I would have more conversations with my staff about their strengths, passions, and goals in life and help empower them to be the best versions of themselves possible.
  • I would ask more questions, listen more intently, and paraphrase more with my customers to really find out what they wanted.
  • I would network and communicate more with the surrounding community to see how we could break out and serve them while we were doing our work.

In short, I would see all people’s value more and try to add even more value by serving them. I think this would help me be more successful in some of the challenging times I went through.
